Vijaya Atluru was born in India. She completed her college and medical school in Andhra medical College, India, and came to the United States in 1974 in pursuit of advanced training in pediatrics. After one year of internship in Mount Sinai Hospital of Miami beach, she came to Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow.

Dr. Atluru completed her pediatric training in 1977 and a 3 year fellowship in pediatric neurology in 1980. She is board certified in pediatrics by the American Board of pediatrics and Child Neurology by the American Board of psychiatry and neurology.

From July 1980 till June 1989, she was the Director of the child neurology fellowship program at Nassau University Medical Center and subsequently moved to NYU Winthrop Hospital as the Director of child neurology. She currently holds an academic position as an Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Neurology at SUNY Stony brook school of medicine. She is also engaged in teaching medical students and pediatric residents at NYU Winthrop Hospital and has an active child neurology practice with offices in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.

Dr. Atluru has been associated with Little Village since the late 1970s. She was appointed as the medical director for the school in July 2000. She worked closely with the school's founders Dr. Barbara Feingold and Dr. Caryl Bank.

Vijaya and her husband Venkat live in Searingtown. She enjoys being with "her kids in the office" and has started to treat some of her patient's kids now!! In her leisure time she enjoys spending time with her 2 adult married children Naveen & Indira and her two beautiful grandchildren. She enjoys traveling the world and just this year in May, tried skydiving from10,000 feet!!
